Read: Pompeii by Robert Harris

09 Jul

Back to my favorite historical fiction, and my first novel by bestselling author Robert Harris.  I purchased Pompeii at Borders for $1.00.  Seriously… I love sales like this.

Aquarius Marcus Attilius Primus arrives in the Bay of Naples to take over their water system, and to discover why the aquifer has suddenly gone dry.  Marcus’ predecessor is missing, and theories abound as to why the previous Aquarius has disappeared and why the water is running dry.

In true Roman fashion, politics and money are the way to get things done, and with the help of Corelia, daughter of the corrupt speculator, he discovers how the previous Aquarius was involved in the corrupt schemes to keep local town in fresh water… for a price.

But the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius changes plans for everyone, and the novel takes a turn towards survival in the face of one of the greatest disasters ever recorded in history.  Pompeii is a rich novel, stepped in a combination of actual historical fact and fiction that results in a fast paced and very enjoyable read.
